Reading Log
Research shows that students who read for at least 20 minutes a day are more prone to academic success. Not only are they getting "brain food", they are also practicing vital skills that they need to be successful in everyday life. As an avid reader myself, I try my best to get my students excited about reading. Students are required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, but are encouraged to read as much as possible. The 20 minutes does not have to be consecutively, but can been done throughout the day. Once the student has read, they are asked to complete their weekly reading log. Within this log, the students will list the title of the book, what pages they read, how long they read for, and a short summary of what they read. This aids with comprehension and summarizing. If a student happens to finish the book they are reading, they should write "finished" next to that entry.
graphic organizers
For some students, it is beneficial to organize their thoughts using a graphic organizer before they write their summary. Below you will find a number of helpful graphic organizers they may use. Click on the picture of the graphic organizer you want to use to view a full size pdf.
